We're obsessed with sign-up forms... and you should be too!

If you're an avid reader of the Email By Design Journal, you've probably noticed we've given a lot of recent attention to sign-up forms. There's no secret why. Used correctly, these forms have the power to maximise your sales, expand your database and drive lifelong growth. Today, though, we're focusing on something a little different.

Sign-up forms for sales: what are they?

Simple as it sounds, these are the forms you use when you're running a storewide sale, perfect for Black Friday or Boxing Day, when you've got limited time to move as much stock as possible. They work like a regular form, but with a sense of urgency built in, usually a countdown timer:

Regular form
Get 10% off
Email address
Sign up
★ Sale form
Unlock the sale
05Hrs22Min10Sec
Email address
Unlock my discount

The countdown tells customers they won't get this chance again if they turn it down now.

How do you use them?

Like a regular sign-up form, have it pop up shortly after someone lands on your site. Then it changes at the follow-up:

Step 1

Pop up early

Show the form between 7 and 30 seconds after a visitor arrives.

Step 2

Point them to their inbox

Once they sign up, tell them to check their inbox for an exclusive discount.

Step 3

Send a matched welcome email

Here's the difference: a welcome email specific to this sale form, not your generic one.

Matching the welcome email to the form keeps the content relevant to their recent visit, and feels far less generic, which is a big no-no when you're trying to boost sales.

Why implement them during sales?

Not every visitor signs up, especially the browsers. Some don't think 10% off is worth their email, others are just selective about who they hand it to. A special sale form can be the turning point:

A bigger reason to sign up

A limited-time, larger offer tips the customers who'd normally scroll past a standard 10% form.

A signal something's happening

Even if they don't sign up, it notifies customers a big sale is on, making them more likely to buy now so they don't miss out.

A sale is a reason to sign up that a standing 10% off can't compete with. Build a form that says so.
