Setting up a Klaviyo email marketing account may seem like a simple process at first, however, there are many considerations you should make to ensure that your emails deliver as best as possible from the get-go. As the master in all things Klaviyo, we’re here to point you in the right direction for setting up your account to guarantee that you tick all the boxes from the start of your email marketing journey.
Verify Your Domain
This is now a requirement on Klaviyo, but something that can be confusing for business owners who aren’t familiar with it. Verifying your domain involves connecting your Klaviyo settings to your website’s DNS to communicate to Klaviyo that your business is legitimate. You can do this through your domain provider (eg GoDaddy), to add the extra level of validity your account needs to deliver emails well.
Doing this before you attempt to send any emails will also show Klaviyo and inbox providers that you are not attempting to scam, helping to keep you out of spam boxes.
E-commerce Integration
Most e-commerce platforms will integrate quite easily into Klaviyo. Common ones that are simple to integrate are Shopify and WooCommerce. To connect them correctly, head to the settings in the bottom left of your Klaviyo account and search for your e-commerce platform under integrations. Then, follow the steps and you’ll be connected in no time.
Connecting this way ensures that your product feeds can be pulled through dynamically to your emails, ensuring your content is always as up-to-date as possible for your customers.
If you can’t find your platform in the integrations menu, you may need to seek guidance from your website provider.
Customer Lists
Set up your first customer list by using the data you have readily available from prior transactions. If you don’t have data available, that’s okay too. You can create a pop-up form to begin gathering email addresses.
If you have pre-existing data, it’s crucial to check that your customers have opted in and provided marketing consent before uploading them into Klaviyo. This ensures you are not sending them content they don’t want to receive, potentially overstepping legal boundaries. It’s also important to suppress unsubscribers if you’re moving from another email provider to Klaviyo so you don’t contact people who have already opted out.
We recommend trying to keep your customer lists controlled. You don't need hundreds of lists feeding into your database. Having just one list of your key customers and building segments from this will keep everything neat, tidy and easy to manage.
Design assets
Building a master template with your key design assets can help guarantee you have everything you need when you’re creating your emails. You can save assets, such as your logo, menu bar, product recommendations, customer review templates and footers as universal blocks, too. This makes constructing emails a breeze in the future.
